Members of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, are holding the first of six days of strike action today (Tuesday) at Newark Academy, Nottinghamshire.

The action has been called in response to potential restructuring, redundancies and job loss.

Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, said:

“We have made every effort to secure an agreed way forward through genuine negotiation, but there has been no real attempt by the employer to address the concerns of teachers, who are understandably very worried about their jobs and the impact job loss will have on educational provision.

“There are serious concerns about the financial situation at the school and the NASUWT has urged the employer to work with the staff and NASUWT to address these. 

“We deeply regret any disruption which will be caused to pupils and parents and urge the school to engage seriously with us so that this action can be withdrawn and further action avoided.” 

Dave Morgan, NASUWT National Executive Member for Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, said

“There is deep-seated concern about the way the School is being moved forward, but the School and its sponsors are refusing to engage in meaningful dialogue.

“The teachers at Newark Academy are all dedicated and committed members of staff, who just want to offer the best education for the children and young people at the school. They deeply regret any disruption caused.

“Staff reductions will reduce the quality of education for pupils, which is why feelings are running high.

“We remain willing to find a negotiated solution through genuine engagement.”
