Responding to the approval of Jersey's medium term financial plan by the States, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in Jersey said:

“This approval of the medium term financial plan is of deep concern to the NASUWT and its members who work tirelessly to provide the best educational opportunities for children and young people.

“It is completely unacceptable for the States to expect teachers and other public sector workers to bear the brunt of the States’ austerity measures, especially given the clear opposition to these plans as demonstrated in the march and rally which took place on 2nd October.

“Teachers and other public service workers will be justifiably angered by this vote, especially as the States have chosen to ignore addressing the unsustainable tax regime which places the burden of taxation on ordinary working people and small local businesses.

“The measures contained in the plan will hit the poorest and most vulnerable in society hardest.

“The NASUWT National officers will meet later this month to consider this development."
