NASUWT National Executive Member Nick Trier has condemned the Government’s Workplace Capability Assessments for disabled workers at TUC Congress.
The WCAs, he argued, are exacerbating the discrimination and prejudice which these workers face.
He said: “The NASUWT has surveyed its disabled teachers and found that 55% of teachers with a disability have experienced discrimination in relation to pay and career progression. It is often these teachers that find themselves on capability procedures for no reason. It is catch 22; the WCA says they are capable when their school says they are not.
“NASUWT has found that not only are teachers with a disability more likely to be put on capability procedures or a support programme, but these same procedures are used to put pressure on disabled teachers leading to a high incidence of stress.”
